Overview

Pilgrim is an authentic gaff rigged, staysail schooner. She is simply fitted and ready to sail, securely and comfortably to any ocean. She was designed William Wood and built by Howdy Baily & Marine Metals Corporation, Norfolk, Virginia, 1987. She is constructed of heavy guage steel and fully barrier coated. She has been meticulously maintained and is in very good condition and very clean inside and out. Her lines are beautiful, with an elegant bow sprit and a gentle sheer running aft. Like most schooners she is amazingly easy to sail, (even for a couple). The present owners, (who are a couple), have sailed her over 18,000 nm. She has been present in many tall ship events and harbor festivals and has been filmed many times by PBS and HBO.

Under full sail (with just the four lower sails or with the uppers and all seven sails flying, she is a thing of beauty. She develops plenty of power and speed in light air and yet is resistant to heeling, even at 20-30 kts. She has comfortable accomodations and exceptional load carrying ability. Her interior is simple and genuine, with white spruce and varnished cherry cabinetry throughout. She has seven compartments, two private staterooms, a navigator's area with quarterberth, two separate companionways, and sufficient and comfortable berthing for 7-9 people. She is truly a "must see".

Accommodations
Pilgrim's Master Stateroom is large, light and airy with an opening skylight overhead. The bed is queen-sized with real queen-sized mattress, (not foam). The quest's double cabin forward, ahead of the Main Salon has two large single berths with room enough to add two more berths, raising the boat's accomodation from sev to nine. There is a large quarterberth starboard-aft, next to the aft companionway. It is perfect for the navigator or offwatch to sleep soundly or to just grap a few winks. Ahead of the quarterberth is the navigators desk with storage for charts, books, nav tools, etc. There is a large comfortable head, with vanity and sink and an actual bathtub and shower. The master stateroom has cherry cabinetry and closets for clothes and bedding. Throughhulls are already fitted so that a second head could be added forward to serve the guest stateroom.

Pilgrim has some special features. She has a 10" working pot belly stove in the main salon. She also has many traditional gimballed, oil burning lamps located strategically throughout the living areas. Two of these are large trawler type lamps and can produce heat as well as light. There are also over 25 12 VDC lights located strategically throughout the boat, each lighting red or white as needed. Headroom throughout Pilgrim's interior is substantial from 5' 9" to over 6' 4". Berths are all sizeable, measuring 6' 0" or better. You will find Pilgrim to be a very roomy boat. We have the complete set of design and build plans and specifications available for viewing but not copying.

Galley
Pilgrim's galley is delightful. It is located on the port side, amidships, aft of the main salon. The galley is a comfortable and efficient "U" shaped design, with abundant, cherry cabinetry and 270 degrees of wide and accessible counter space and upper and lower cabinets. The countertop is a colorful ceramic tile. The stove is a 3 burner Force 10 set athwartship avoiding the need for gimbaling. The sink has two large and deep stainless sinks. The refrigerator is a Norcold two door, upright, 5.2 CF refrigerator with cooling section below for drinks and perishables and a freezer above. The galley cabinetry and storage for equipment and food is endless with 15 cabinets, a pantry and aditional storage under the floor. Tons of storage for food and other items is available below decks. There is a large, efficient and friendly pass-through between the galley and the Main Salon. Everyone will enjoy the galley and Main Salon areas for cooking and entertainment.

Electronics
Pilgrim has minimal electronics. She has speed, depth readouts, GPS, VHF, and a Heart Link 2000 battery monitor. She does not have other more sophisticated electronics. Her owners have loved and used her as the schooner she is and have preferred to keep her simple and traditional. You can buy her today and sail away as she is, or you can add electronics and systems to your heart's content. There is plenty or room for adding whtever you like, GPS plotter, SSB, radar, Sat phone, generator, waternmaker, flat panel TV, etc. With Pilgrim you will not be buying a boat full of five year old, obsolete generators and electronics. She is a clean slate and you can decide how you want to use and equip her.

Electrical
Pilgrim has both 110 VAC shore power and independent 12 VDC systems. Her 12 VDC system consists of a high output 125 amp alternator, 2 new 8D, (220 AH), house batteries, 1 new series 31 engine starting battery, and a metered 24 circuit breaker distribution panel. Her 110 VAC system consists of two independent 30 amp circuits, with separate 30 amp shore power cords. There is also a Heart 2000R, (2000 watt), automatic, combination, battery charger/inverter.

Deck and Hull Equipment
Pilgrim is a full keel, shallow draft, gaff rigged, steel, staysail schooner. Being steel and full keel she is very strong and seaworthy. Her steering is a robust rack and pinion system, very simple and essentially indestructible. The entire mechanism can be accessed under the helmsman's seat. For ground tackle she carries two large anchors, one 60 lb CQR and one 60 lb Danforth. The CQR is on 300 feet of 1/2 inch chain. There are two coils of 300 feet each, of 1 inch nylon three strand line at the ready for either or both anchors. There is a manual ABI bronze windlass at the bow to help with anchor retrieval.

Mechanical & Engine Room

Pilgrim's engine is a naturally aspirated, Perkins 4-236,85 HP diesel. It is located amidships under the master stateroom berth. Engine hours as of 12/20/05 are 3658 hours. The engine drives a three blade 24" prop. With the slow revving diesel and 3 blades prop Pilgrim can cruise at 7 1/2 knots. Being naturally aspirated and with a consumption rate of about 1 1/2 gallons per hour, and with fuel capacity of 250 gallons Pilgrim she has a cruising range of about 1200 nm.

Brokers Comments
Pilgrim, like many schooners is amazingly easy to sail. Her present owners, who are a couple, have lived aboard and have sailed her extensively for 12 years, mostly in the Great Lakes. Over the past three years they have logged over 18,000 nm. As a gaff rigged, staysail schooner, she sails very well and easily in a wide wind range and has exceptional load carrying capacity. With the standing spars and lower four sails, mainsail, foresail, staysail and jib, her sail area is about 1330 sqft. With the topmasts and upper three sails, flying job, fisherman and main topsail, her sail area is 2100 sqft. Having a steel hull, Pilgrim is very strong, secure and comfortable at rest or underway.

In addition to the photos and descriptive info about Pilgrim supplied here, the listing broker has two movies of Pilgrim under sail. One is a short movie, 33 mb in size and emailable. The other is a much longer movie on a CD and therefore not emailable. Ask the listing broker about the movie clip if interested.
