Quadraconic Hull design by Huckins Yacht

The Huckins Quadraconic Hull has been described as seakindly, legendary, and even iconic.

Below are some helpful facts about this design to better understand why Frank Pembroke Huckin's (FPH) Quadraconic Hull has flourished since 1928.

The name itself was derived from the partaking of four conical insertions that generate a specific form of hull and the Quadraconic design allowed for the following characteristics:

  • The Quadraconic Formulae generates a hull that is as free from pounding as any displacement hull.
  • The hull is as sea worthy as a displacement hull when cruising at below planning speeds.
  • The hull attains planning at extremely low speed.
  • The hull has a sustainable sea speed of at least 50% higher than minimum planning
  • speed.
  • The hull design obtains considerably higher sustainable speed on any given ratio of
  • size, length and power than other seagoing hulls whose buoyancy and seaworthiness
  • are exceptional and free from pendulum roll.

The United States Navy ordered 18 PT Boats from Huckins Yacht during World War II. The Huckins PT Boats outperformed the military's expectations and were vastly superior compared to other PT Boats in service during World War II. Military testing proved the following characteristics:

  • The Huckins PT Boats, loaded with 30,000 pounds of military payload, planed at less than 10 knots while others designed had difficulty planning out at 20 knots.
  • PT Boats were required to have a 500 mile range and the Huckins designed PT Boat had a 751 mile range.
  • The Huckins designed boats did not pound, they did not get overtaken in a following sea, they were not wet boats, and their motion was free from roll at above planning speeds.
  • FPH's Quadraconic Hull Design turned 88 years old in 2016 and Huckins Yacht has built a total of 458 custom yachts since launching Hull # 1 in 1928.

Accommodations

La Belle Helene has two ensuite staterooms which are situated on opposite ends of the yacht. The salon and galley are located between and the bridge deck is six steps up from the salon.  High quality Makore African Cherry joinerwork is seen throughout the yacht. The Huckins custom cabinetry and trim is attractive; especially when coupled with the complex curves and book-matched cabinet fronts and drawers. A his and hers bath with adjoining tub compliment the owner's cabin. Large windows, opening ports, granite counters, cedar lined lockers, and good headroom add to the ambiance.

Salon

The salon is located six steps down from the bridge deck. A settee is built into the aft bulkhead and access to the master stateroom is found on the port side of the salon. Forward, a curved bar separates the galley from the salon. There are built in cabinets and a bookshelf, all expertly joined in African Cherry. Large windows surround each side of the salon.

Galley

The gourmet galley is found to starboard, two steps down from the salon. There is a large curved breakfast bar crafted from African Cherry that separates the galley from the open salon.

All appliances are built in behind grain-matched wood cabinet fronts.

  • Granite Countertops
  • Built in storage for crystal, china, and flatware
  • Sub Zero Fridge and Freezer
  • Miele Dishwasher
  • Miele Oven
  • Ceramic Cooktop
  • Wood Sole

Master Stateroom

The master stateroom is located aft, stretches across the yacht's beam, and is isolated from the rest of the interior. A walk around queen berth is centered on the forward bulkhead. The bed faces a curved dresser which is built into the aft bulkhead. Access to the his and hers head is found on either side of the dresser. The ensuite bath is well proportioned and features a large tub and shower. The washer and dryer is located on the starboard side of the cabin, hidden behind cherry cabinetry. In addition, there are his and hers cedar lined wardrobe lockers and ample cabinetry for storage. Stainless opening ports add natural light to the cabin.

Guest Stateroom

The guest stateroom is all the way forward, located one step down from the galley. The guest stateroom affords complete privacy and separation from the rest of the interior. V berth with a small seat in between accommodates two guests. Cedar lined hanging lockers plus built in storage are found throughout this cabin. There is an ensuite head with large stand up shower.

Bridge Deck

The bridge deck is nostalgic looking and the custom finish is breathtaking. Varnished woodwork, teak and holly sole and polished stainless steel hardware showcase the American boat building heritage that Huckins Yacht Corporation represents. The two lounges aft are complimented by a varnished teak Hi-Low table. There is a full suite of premium electronics and navigation equipment at the helm. Pantograph doors at each side of the helm allow access to the side decks. A built in wet bar with sink, fridge, and ice maker are all found on the bridge.

Cockpit

Aft of the bridge deck and three steps down is the cockpit. There are two large varnished storage lockers on each side of the steps. Cockpit seating is comfortable and complimented by a Bimini shade. Access to the engine room is found here via three large deck hatches. A wide transom door provides safe access to the swim platform.
